Imagine with me for a moment that you are locked within the confines of your car...and your husband and his father feel the need for speed? I mean as in racing each other on back windy roads with no lines painted down the middle while it's pitch black/10 pm at night!
Well, friends, this was my dilemma tonight!
We had all been out to a lovely dinner at Bonefish Grill (I recommend the Bang Bang Tacos!), and then over to gather some groceries (including a nice 12 pack bottles of beer)...Mike, myself and his mom climb into our Subaru WRX and Mike's dad crawls into his Scion tC...and the race begins...slowly at first.
Thank goodness for traffic lights...they saved us while we were strolling along the main road, plus normal traffic...but after one turn on the back roads, things changed quite quickly...
Hang onto your horses kiddos!
Since Mike had stalked along behind his dad, we were close on the heels (if you will) with our headlights surely shining right into his dad's rear view mirror. I grabbed onto my handle and braced myself into my seat as the engine revved and these two blue cars zipped through the black darkness of night...
Shifting gears and whizzing past the scenery outside the car I could almost see life flashing before my eyes...it was as though in our car we were stalking the prey ahead of us...lurking just behind and close enough to instill fear, yet just out of reach to not obtain the prey
...a jungle attack in the making...
Mike's mom yelled from the back, breaking the screeching silence saying, "I LOST THE BEER!! I LOST THE BEER!!!" Well, this was no good...we were afraid that the beer was going to crush the other items in the back of the car as we rocked back and forth along the winding roads...
Luckily as we swayed back the other way, she yelled back,"I GOT THE BEER...I GOT THE BEER!!" We had all been hysterically laughing since the first time she cried out, and now we were bursting out with laughter...maybe the only thing keeping me sane in this crazy car ride!
The ride wasn't over yet though...we tore across hills and I could feel dinner rise up through my throat as my belly lifted up...and my head nearly hit the roof...this fun moment happened 3 times...
Oh man...the best part is coming up my friends...you just wait...
The final crazy-almost-90-degree-scary-right-hand-turn was fast approaching...and both cars seemed to be ill intent on hitting this hard and making the last bit of the home stretch...Mike's dad heads into the turn hard and the car seems to stick to the ground and whir around the corner in lightening speed, which only told me that Mike was going to do his best to continue to keep his lights right on the tail of the car...in we go...
As I try to focus on the end and getting through the turn I can hear the tires squealing to hold to the road...yes, that's the car I am in...my body slides across my seat and I feel like I am facing the wrong way (if that's even possible)...and in a split second---we are out of the turn and burning rubber up the hill and down the home stretch...
We finally turn into the driveway and I thank the heavens that we are all safe, and that I have a story to tell...I am pretty sure I just experienced what being in some race car feels like, just on the grand scale of a normal car with 2 race car like drivers-pushing each of their cars to the extreme...
Quite possibly the best part was once the men got out of their cars and started talking about their raucous behavior...Mike asked if his dad heard his car tires screeching down the road, but merely said "I didn't hear any tires, all I heard was Car Talk!" (makes me think of the BBC show Top Gear...)
It was totally worth it though :)
