Smoke-free please!!

First off, I would like to say...

to each his own

Maybe you are a smoker and enjoy your cigarette and I don't blame you for it, I have my things too...

But, really, I work in a cancer lab and every morning when I come in and go to the ladies room (which has 4 stalls), it

SMELLS

of cigarette smoke.

So, please, cautious smoker person, at least smoke where it is allowed and not INSIDE a women's bathroom IN a CANCER lab...

sheesh

Funny thing happened today...

Let me rephrase that...

In retrospect a funny thing happened today, but definitely NOT while it actually happened...

Does that even make sense?!?

Anyways, lemme splain this situation to ya...

So I was busy at work today and (mind you I work in a lab and wear the white coat and gloves and all...) I was getting some samples ready to run when my glove slipped over a tube top and it felt HORRIBLE...

Like-think in this frame of mind...my hand just slipped and it feels as though I have ripped my entire thumb nail clean off from my thumb, you know, easy stuff like that...

Yes, in my head, this was the scenario that was happening

You know what makes it worse?

The fact that I am wearing GLOVES and CANNOT see what has actually happened to my thumb and nail (that I was currently praying WAS still attached...)

So, also keep in mind that for the better part of my life, when things super freak me out, I have an M.O.

I faint (read #6 on this post)

That's right, screw reality folks, I take the high road and pass out on the world, no need to literally feel the pain when I can go into my darkness and not even remember things...

tons better, right?

or, in my case today, maybe not...

(I promise the kinda funny part is coming)

So, lucky for me I had been working on a raised chair which I was sitting on...doing work on my lab bench with things neatly placed around for convenience...such as the tips I was using for my pipette and something to shake up my samples, samples in ice and a trash can beside me for ease of disregarding my trash into...

So, back to the swing of things- I was feeling overwhelmed by this "my thumb nail is torn off...OMG" that I tried my best to put my head down at my work area and take in some deep breaths, full on knowing my next task was...you guessed it...to faint...

Then, it must have happened (the fainting part) and low and behold I think someone must have been watching over me and my clumsy/accident prone self, cuz I neatly fell to my right side where I had placed none other than the extremely tall

trash can

Yes, you can laugh now, this is the "funny"...I fainted onto the trash can...it was basically holding up my silly self along with the swivel chair I was on...

At the moment of waking, I was half wondering "where the H-E-Double hockey sticks am I?", then promptly realized I was being held by a trash can on my row at work.

If anyone actually saw me, they left me or didn't bother to say anything to me the rest of the day...but the lab was still pretty empty and no one usually passes by unless they have to use the restroom and pass by my row...

This was probably in my best interest (talk about being hugely embarrassed...)

So, thank goodness for the trash can is all I can say...otherwise I would have fallen

all
the

way

down

to

the

floooooooor...tada!

And who knows, maybe I woulda picked up a concussion along with my thumb injury (and no worries, nail still intact and you can barely see that anything actually happened to it..)

Now all I have is a bum thumb and a horrible back and neck ache...sweeeet

Lesson learned: always place trash can near me in case I decide to be clumsy, it's pretty awesome at holding me up :)

Language Barrier

As I may have mentioned before, I work in a laboratory...so we have a compilation of different nationalities and sometimes what one person means can be lost in the lingo of language barriers...

Well, this happened today..at lunch...as usual

Our lunch conversations make my days

for real

We had a guy who left for Med school come back to visit and he was asked by one of the women in our lab the following...(and keep in mind that this guy was a bit of a mind in the trash type...)

"Have you had any deep interactions with any females on your campus?"

Now, to most people this may be taken as
-do you have a girlfriend?
-did you make and friends that are females?
etc...

But naturally this guy takes it one step further and exploits this fact to the rest of the lunch room (mind you, he was nice enough to wait until the question asker was gone from the room)...

So naturally it has now turned into the new way to talk about sex...

Had any deep interactions lately?

Oi!

Did I mention I love the people in my lab and the fact that we have such a barrier and they can hardly understand Americans and we can hardly understand any of them (they are from all over every other continent...) makes for a really fun work place sometimes!

And don't worry, it's doesn't always get "in the gutter"...

Empty

Today my workplace is very v-a-c-a-n-t...almost eerily so.

I am one of 4 people here working today out of a normal almost 20 people.

The lab is usually bustling and busy and people talking everywhere and experiments going on like crazy.

Not today.

It ALMOST felt like a belated April Fools joke (haha, you are at work on a holiday!), but most of the lab is actually down in Florida for a cancer research conference. I got the short end of that stick!

I am stuck here doing more research and keeping things going.

But it is quite nice to have a little less crazy here and a lot more quiet.

And to top it off, it is going to be about 80 degrees today, so it will kinda feel like Florida weather!

Why didn't I just stay home in bed?

It's been one of *those* days here at work...

Let me remind you that I work in a laboratory so that the following may make a bit more sense...

For starters I knew that today was going to be hectic^max with tons of experiments to complete and I would most likely be running around the lab (literally) like a chicken with my head cut off...

I had 3 big mishaps today which included:

1) spilling a sample, luckily (I guess you could call it luck) I still had about 1/2 left and was able to complete that experiment
2) I broke a part of a machine I needed to use, so I had to do some crafty handwork and take pieces from another broken machine to fix one so I could finish this task up
3) The biggest doozy of them all happened in the afternoon (this procedure took me from 7:45am til about 2pm)...when I mis-labled tubes = re-do tomorrow! YAY, fun times

I was about a minute from walking out of work...can you do that? (most likely get fired!)
Or better yet, just sprawling out on the floor kicking and screaming in my tantrum like a 2 year old for all to see...maybe that would have been better...

I think I should have known today was going to be bad since I was almost having a bit of
deja vu...

I was walking up the hill to work and literally saw the same person at about the same place in 2 instances...I know this can happen since lots of people work/go to school in the area I am, but 2 days in a row...and at the EXACT spot as yesterday?!? craziness! It's never happened to me yet and I have been walking that hill almost 3 years now...

So, I probably should have just stayed home on this un-sunshiney Wednesday and watched tv in bed all day and snuggled up with this cute pup...(Ok, Channing isn't that little anymore, but gosh darn isn't he cute...makes my day a bit better!)

I need a fast forward button

Some days I wish I could just push "Fast Forward" and get through my work day much faster so I can come home and relax, enjoy time with Mike and the dog...but also have the energy to enjoy time with them.

I tend to get home and feel super exhausted from the work day with not much energy left to do anything other than sitting on the couch (which is not good!)

It would also be nice to have a rewind button for the stupid things I say/do and regret once they have been done...

Or a pause button to hold onto those moments that you don't want to let go of and that happen so quickly...

Wouldn't it be nice?!?
